The Third Summer Has Passed
By Kim Hodne -
The third summer has passed
A hint of autumn in the air
Another season without you
I see the world through your eyes
The conflicts of war
Young men your age maimed and killed
Terrorism on the rise
Such a sad state of affairs
What would you think now?
I miss your hearing your views
The passion in your voice
The earnestness in your prayers
Your friends writing of new loves
Marriages and jobs changes
Mission trips and memories
Of happier times gone by
Granddad turning eighty-eight
Celebrating a 65th anniversary
Cousins growing older
New life joining our family
The world was not always kind to you
You fought so many battles
Your strength gave way
The burdens too great
I try to honor you
With kindnesses to strangers
And friends alike
Feeling extra compassion
Never knowing what battles they fight
Would you know us now?
So changed by your absence
A void never to be filled
So many unanswered questions
I hope you still see the sunrises
And the beauty of wide-open venues
The peaks of mountains
And the goodness of mankind
You’re my first thought in the morning
The last when I fall asleep
Knowing you are safe now
Finding peace in His arms
